Tribal Government Challenge

The Tribal Government Challenge is funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and administered by SGC, recognizing the value of the State partnering and working with Tribes to meet our collective climate and energy goals.

Planning Grant Program

The Tribal Government Challenge Planning Grant Program provides funds for California Native American Tribes to conduct planning to identify solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve clean energy access, and advance climate adaptation and resiliency on Tribal lands and in Tribal communities.

The goals of this program are to:

  • Support planning activities that promote clean energy access and energy efficiency, with a focus on promoting public health, reducing emissions, and supporting climate adaptation and resiliency in Tribal communities. These planning activities can include:
    • increasing access to clean transportation and clean energy options,
    • increasing agricultural energy efficiency,
    • increasing energy affordability,
    • increasing energy efficiency in buildings, and
    • planning for climate impacts and risks to energy systems and community members.
  • Support Tribal planning and analysis that also advances the State of California’s climate and energy policies through Tribal planning and analysis.
